As a National group of gay and lesbian Australian surf lifesavers and their friends, the Kirby Institute of the University of New South Wales has requested assistance with their:

1           TAXI KAB Study; and

2           Opposites Attract Study.

TAXI KAB Study

The TAXI-KAB Study is designed to measure the Knowledge, Attitudes, and Beliefs (KAB) of gay and bisexual men in Australia when they Think About eXposure to Infection by HIV. Gay men are going to experience many changes in the way healthcare is presented to them in the next few months. We are seeking information from these men in order to inform the progress of the “Treatments as Prevention” revolution that is occurring in Australian health care, right now. The TAXI KAB Study is vitally important to the development of these changes and to gay and bisexual men in Australia.

Opposites Attract Study

Recent research shows that when an HIV-positive person is on HIV treatment, the risk of passing on HIV to their HIV-negative partner is reduced by 96% among heterosexuals. But what about among gay men? We just don’t know. And men who are in serodiscordant relationships (that is, where one man is HIV-positive and the other is HIV-negative) really need to know the answer to this question.

The Opposites Attract Study will help us determine just how much HIV treatment can reduce the risk of HIV transmission from an HIV-positive man to his HIV-negative partner. It is the first, and so far only, study in the world specifically looking at this issue among gay men. We need to ask both partners in serodiscordant relationships about HIV treatments, viral load, and HIV transmission through a short online questionnaire completed after each visit for their regular sexual health and HIV testing.

To successfully answer this very important question for gay men, we need to enrol several hundred pairs of men who are currently in a serodiscordant sexual relationship, in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide, regardless of whether the positive partner is on treatments or not.

Daaaarlings!!!

Hope you are all well and I gather your seasons start soon now Spring is in the air! Stay safe, you know much you all mean to me!! Well now I want to invite you all to a fantastic weekend called 'Coast Out' at Coffs Harbour Oct 26th-28th. I have been the last two years and it's so much fun, a brilliant mix of gay and lesbian communities from Syd, Melb, Brizzy, Gold Coast, Lismore and of course the lovely locals from beautiful Coffs. It's not the home of just one big banana as I discovered last year LOL!!!

The organiser Todd is a dear friend and two years ago six lifesavers came up and we did the Mardi Gras routine on the main stage and the crowd went nuts!! Well great news, we have been invited back to do another show on the Saturday night and I would LOVE as many of you a
s possible in it!! I'll use the same steps from this years parade but the song is "It's Raining Men" Ladies, that doesn't mean you can't be in it too!!

Also note that there is a surf comp too which you would love surely! The parties are great, the beaches stunning, there's a drag show with dolphins at the Pet Purpoise Pool which is so hilarious so you have to trust me, it's fab, you MUST come!!! Our first fundraising event is 30 September 2012 (Sunday of the long weekend) where we hold a BBQ at Bunnings Alexandria. This was our most successful event last year in terms of raising money.

The one really important thing I forgot to say during rehearsals is how much I respect and admire you all for being real lifesavers and putting your lives on the line to help others. POSTPONED – first Parade rehearsal postponed by a week!

Hi Guys

Our illustrious choreographer Laurence is deep underground preparing our routine.

As such he is unprepared to commence teaching us the routine this Thursday.

Accordingly, our first rehearsal will be postponed by a week to Thursday 16 February 2012 @ Bondi Surf Lifesaving Club @ 7pm.

Remember there is still time to register before next Thursday’s rehearsal!

MG FAIR DAY this Sunday, help out LWP

LWP are having a stand at this year’s MG Fair Day.

If you can assist in manning the stand between noon and 4 that would be great, send us an email with your contacts and we will tee up a time for you to attend.

We will be handing out SLSA information, providing sun cream and generally promoting surf safety.

2012 Parade Registration – Spots are filling!!!!

Hi LWP

Thanks for those that have already registered. It’s great to see the list filling up. We really would like to reach out to others (that are at your clubs but perhaps not on the list) and especially those at clubs outside the Eastern Suburbs... Encourage your friends to join!

Our creative director and choreographer have been really busy and have come up with some great ideas to make 2012 even better than last year (if that's even possible). The rest of the committee have also been busy organising sponsors etc etc...

Numbers will have to be limited, so get in soon to guarantee your spot... (registering details below!)

For the Saturday 4 March 2012 Parade we need:
1 Dance routine participants;
2 Support crew;
3 Driver; and
4 Float construction assistants.

Rehearsal Dates: 7pm – 9pm Thursday 9, 16, 23 and Wednesday 29 February and Thursday 1 March 2012.

First three rehearsals are at Bondi Surf Club

2012 Parade Registration

It is time to REGISTER for the Saturday 3 March 2012 Parade!

We need Parade:

Big thanks goes out to those members who have supported us so far at the Westpac Helicopter fundraiser at Stonewall Hotel on 11 August 2011, the Bunnings BBQ on 4 September 2011 and the Beresford Hotel on 4 December 2011.

As everyone should also participate in at least one other event we look forward to your assistance with MG Fair Day on Sunday 12 February 2012, BinGay on Friday 24th February 2012 and Tamarama Beach BBQ Carnival on Sunday 26 February 2012.
